Kerr County
Kerrville
The
settlement of Kerrville began in 1869 largely due to Captain Charles A. Schreiner.
Captain Schreiner was born in Riguewihr, France, and served with the
Confederacy. He also was a Texas Ranger. Captain Schreiner established a
general merchandising business in Kerrville in 1869. The Charles Schreiner Co.
owned over 600,000 acres of land that stretched 80 miles northwest to the city
of Menard. Captain Schreiner established the Schreiner Institute, now known as Schreiner University.
Ingram
In
1879 the city of Ingram was founded where the Old Spanish Trail crosses the
banks of the Guadalupe. J.C.W. Ingram, the founder, constructed a store,
conducted church services, and built the post office. In 1936 the new part of
town was built because of a disastrous flood that occurred. Old Ingram
buildings now house art studios and galleries, boutiques, and restaurants.
Hunt
Located at the junction of the north and south forks of the Guadalupe River,
Hunt was named for the friend of the founder, Alvie Joy in 1912. Alvie Joy
built the first post office for its residents, who were mostly farmers and
shingle makers. Dating from the 1920's private camps were built along the banks
of the river and still thrive every season.
Center Point
First used in 1858 as a water crossing for the Guadalupe River, many people
moved to former Zanzenburg to build water powered grist mills and lumber mills.
Originally named Zanzenburg by its Austrian founder, Center Point was renamed
in 1872 because it was halfway between four pioneer communities. The town
prospered after the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad in 1887.
